HUMBOLDT — Coming off an extended football season, the Humboldt boys took a little longer than usual to get into basketball shape.
The Wildcats are on a roll right now.
Humboldt won its sixth straight game here Monday night, defeating Fort Dodge 74-60 in the final. The Wildcats (8-4 overall) are 7-1 since losing three of four games earlier this year.
Jackson Flaherty and Elliott Carlson both scored 16 points, Cohen Matson added 13 points and Valley Davis added 11 points for Humboldt.
The Dodgers (2-10) were paced by Cade Westerhoff’s game-high 21 points. Freshman Reggie Pederson added 16 points and Carter Woodruff added 13 points.
“We gave a huge effort, but we dug ourselves a hole early and couldn’t fight back.” FDSH head coach Willie Williams said. “We shouldn’t be down 15 points in the first half, it’s not possible.
“It’s a run game and we fought. We answer, and they always answer. That’s tough to overcome, especially when you play against a really good ball club.”
Humboldt went up 26-11 early and held a 14-point advantage in the first half before the Dodgers cut the deficit to seven points.
Leading by 10 going into the fourth, the Wildcats delivered the final knockout punch with a 12-4 run.
“Cade has played well and has been that way lately.” Williams said. “I thought Reggie, Carter, Cowner (Jensen), Teiben (Altman) gave us good minutes. Really, they all stretched out. Humboldt is very good, very physical, very good. This is a well-coached team.
“I was proud of the overall effort and energy, but again, the execution has to be more consistent.”
Karlsson, who recently became the seventh Wildcat to surpass 1,000 career points, was averaging 24.4 points per game before Monday and had scored 125 points in his past four games.
Fort Dodge returns to the court Tuesday when it hosts Waterloo East. They close out the week Friday at Mason City.
Humboldt will play North Central Conference play at Clarion-Goldfield/Dows on Tuesday before hosting Webster City here on Friday.
