Hugo Boss Disappoints at Milan Fashion Week with Lackluster, Copycat Collection
The highly anticipated Hugo Boss show at Milan Fashion Week left much to be desired, delivering a collection that fell flat in its attempt to merge formal suiting with casual wear. Creative director Marco Falcioni had promised an evolution of the brand’s formalwear DNA, but the execution appeared uninspired and disjointed. The collection, titled “Out of Office,” was intended to evoke a sense of freedom and relaxation. Instead, it felt like a cliched and forced attempt to cater to a market already saturated with the well-worn concept of mixing business attire with leisurewear. The white-collar escape fantasy missed the mark, failing to deliver on the luxury and sophistication that Hugo Boss is known for.
Despite a star-studded cast, including athletes such as tennis players Matteo Berrettini and Taylor Fritz, German runner Alica Schmidt, and swimmer Nicolò Martinenghi, the show struggled to impress. Even David Beckham, who recently signed a multiyear deal with Boss, couldn’t save the day, despite looking sharp in a formal navy blue suit. The rest of the collection lacked the same polish, with men’s suits that were fluid and soft but lacked innovation or edge. The women’s pieces felt like an afterthought, missing the cohesive vision needed for a strong runway presentation. Compared to previous seasons where the brand pushed creative boundaries, this collection felt like a step backward.
One of the most glaring issues was the show’s blatant replication of Gucci’s London show from six months ago. From the grass flooring to the mirrored ceiling, the decor at the Hugo Boss show in Milan was nearly identical to Gucci’s innovative presentation. What had been a fresh and creative concept for Gucci felt like a lazy imitation when repurposed by Hugo Boss. Rather than offering a new take or elevating the design, the copycat setup only highlighted the show’s lack of originality. In the fiercely competitive world of high fashion, standing out is essential — yet this show did little to distinguish itself.
Ultimately, the Hugo Boss show in Milan was a missed opportunity to redefine the brand’s image and push creative limits. Instead, it came across as derivative, lacking in the innovation, luxury, and elegance that Milan Fashion Week attendees expect. For a brand that prides itself on refinement, this collection did little to maintain relevance in a fast-evolving industry where originality is key.
