The Dallas Stars return after a shortened summer and open a six-game preseason schedule on Saturday night at home against the St. Louis Blues.
The Stars, who ended their partnership with Bally Sports, will stream their team’s games for free on their new Victory+ app, which launched earlier this month. Developed by A Parent Media, the app is the first in-market service to allow fans to watch live sports direct-to-consumer for free.
All six of the Stars’ preseason games and 69 of their 82 regular season games will be broadcast on Victory+.
Here’s how to access the new app and stream Stars games this season.
Why did Starz pivot to Victory+?
The Stars partnered with A Parent Media Co. Inc. to develop an app that will broadcast games to fans in the market for free.
The announcement of the switch from Bally Sports to Victory+ came this summer, shortly after a tough year for Bally after parent company Diamond Sports Group filed for bankruptcy in March 2023.
With uncertainty over how to broadcast games this season, the Stars explored other options and ultimately settled on Victory+, agreeing to a seven-year deal. The Stars will earn revenue through APMC’s advertising model. The app is modeled after one APMC created for Frisco-based sports and comedy group Dude Perfect, which launched about a year ago.
Who do you think is in the market?
All-Stars fans in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas can watch the team’s preseason and regular season games for free. Blackout restrictions apply for out-of-market fans, but they can still watch Stars games on ESPN+ as usual.
For the playoffs, the first round will be available on both Victory+ and the national broadcast, all subsequent rounds will be available only on the national broadcast, and there will be 14 regular season games available nationally, with one game being broadcasted both locally and nationally.
How can I download it?
Victory+ is currently available for download on all Roku, Apple iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV and web streaming devices.
You can download the app by typing “victoryplus” into the search bar of your device’s app store or by visiting victoryplus.com.
Victory+ recently announced that the app will soon be available on Vizio, Vidaa, LG, Samsung and AppleTV.
What do I do after I download the app?
Once you download the Victory+ app or log into the website, you will be asked to create a free account.
The platform is free, so you won’t need to upload any payment information. Once you create an account, you’ll be able to stream Stars games starting Saturday.
What else can I watch on Victory+?
This season, the Victory+ app will broadcast live games, pre- and post-match shows, plus all Stars media content.
Currently, you can watch interviews with coaches and players from training camp, season preview content, classic games and other featured videos from Dallas Stars players.
This season’s matches will be available to re-watch for a certain period of time after the match has concluded.
Are other teams streaming games on the app this season?
The Anaheim Ducks also have a deal with Victory+ to stream their games this season, though in-market Dallas Stars fans will not be able to watch those games.
APMC CEO Neil Gruninger said discussions with other teams were continuing but he expected more deals to be done before next season.
