Homecoming will be held this weekend in Harrisonburg, with JMU football (5-2, 1-2 SBC) taking on Southern Miss (1-6, 0-3 SBC) on Saturday afternoon. The Dukes are heavy betting favorites, and Southern Miss’ play was so bad that coach Will Hall was fired before this week’s game. The Golden Eagles aren’t very good.
JMU is projected to win on Saturday, but the Dukes have indicated they are guaranteed not to have a game in 2024.

The loss to ULM, which is currently 5-1, was not a disaster. The loss to Georgia Southern wasn’t a disaster either. Losing at home to Southern Miss would be an absolute disaster for JMU football (don’t tell those who mandate AP style that I said that). The Dukes can’t afford to lose at home to one of the worst teams in the Group of Five.
Let’s hope that coach Bob Chesney’s team plays well in the recovery phase heading into the bye week. A win would secure a bowl berth and keep JMU in the increasingly chaotic and unpredictable Sun Belt East race. This game has great meaning for JMU and is a great opportunity to dominate their opponent in front of a packed crowd.
