Christmas clearance shopping is basically here! 🤗
Oh, we love that sweet little word “clearance”! 😍 The 2024 Post-Christmas Clearance Sale is almost here! I couldn’t be more excited.
One of the best times to stock up on Christmas decorations, non-food gifts, paper goods, ornaments, and more for next year is after Christmas, when items are typically on clearance for 50-90% off. It’s the perfect time to get big discounts on all things Christmas so you don’t have to pay retail prices next year.
Check out this video I made on Instagram.
Follow the shopping timeline below to get the best deals…
Typically, retailers such as Target, Walmart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby and other popular stores will open their stores by Dec. 26 or at some locations to save space for the New Year, Super Bowl, and Valentine’s Day. We’re starting to discount holiday inventory by 50% off. item.
And a few days before New Year’s Day (around December 28th to 31st), many stores will mark down Christmas clearance items to 70% to 75% off.
And as the new year dawns, things get really exciting…
Typically, after the new year, stores like Walgreens, CVS, Michaels, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, Target, and Hobby Lobby begin offering Christmas clearance with up to 80% and even 90% off.
Paying just 10% off next year’s holiday items is great, but stock up if you can, as item selections can overlap.
Here are 11 Christmas clearance items to keep an eye on.
1. Gift wrapping
Grab these items while you can! Find cheap wrapping paper, gift bags, tissue paper, gift tags, bows, bows, and more to stock up on for next year (and even boxed greeting cards).
Also, consider purchasing colors and prints that can be used for other holidays throughout the year (silver/gold for anniversaries, red for Valentine’s Day, purple/blue for birthday parties, etc.).
2. Paper products and storage
Stock up on holiday paper plates, cups, napkins, tissues, paper towels, cutlery, etc. when prices hit rock bottom and save them for next season. You can host next year’s holiday party on the cheap, and it’ll be a little less stressful when it’s that time of year again.
Also, look out for discounts on holiday items like Ziploc storage bags and storage containers, holiday-colored wrap, baking cups, foil pans with lids, and other year-round kitchen essentials.
3. Kitchen & Bath Items
Other things to look for are Christmas kitchen towels, pot holders, tableware, storage tins, serving trays, kitchen rugs, bath towels, soap dispensers and other fun items that make great gifts and will last until next year . Every year I love hanging new hand towels in my kitchen or bathroom that I forgot about. Also perfect as a gift.
Also, be sure to check prices on holiday household items (dish detergent, hand soap, etc.) as they may be eligible for holiday clearance prices if they aren’t marked down.
4. Ornaments
In the past, stores like Target have had pre-Christmas clearance sales with up to 50% off on ornaments. Expect these sales to get even better as ornaments are 75% to 90% off starting December 25th.
5. Holiday decorations
It’s the perfect time to stock up on cheap boxes of lights, ornaments, stockings, tree skirts, cushions, and lots of other festive home decor. If you’ve been waiting for a deal on your new Christmas tree or inflatable for your front yard, now’s your chance to get it at a huge discount.
Don’t forget to look for discounted full size seasonal candles. These make great holiday gifts next year, so stock up your gift closet while the prices are low.
6. Gift set
Need a belated holiday gift this year? If so, get a discounted gift basket filled with food, hot drink mixes, K-cups, or candy. Don’t stock up on pre-wrapped gift baskets filled with food and candy, because otherwise you might not be able to eat them by this time next year.
However, if you don’t care about gift packaging and can score a good deal on one, it might be worth breaking out the gift basket and eating the items separately before they expire.
It’s best to look for non-food gift sets that can be used year-round or saved for next year’s gifting, such as body wash duos, beauty sets, cute mugs, stationery sets, ornaments, and games. (Think of your teachers, neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family!).
7. Seasonal ingredients
Do you like drinking peppermint mocha coffee all year round?Do you have a kid who likes some kind of cookie in their school lunch? Is there something that you or your child would be okay with eating right away or in the future? Be sure to look for discounted food and snacks in seasonal flavors for parties and events (like the Super Bowl).
The bakery’s frosted sugar cookies are hard to come by, so keep an eye out to see if the price will drop!
Also often marked down are things like flavored coffee and coffee creamer, refrigerated or packaged holiday cookies, various candies, flavored snacks, and meat and cheese sets. But it often goes faster, so you want to go fast! Remember to get foods that can be frozen or ready to eat to minimize the chance of having to throw out expired food. Please.
8. Clothing and accessories
Don’t miss the clothing department. If you find a stock of tacky Christmas sweaters, shirts, socks, pajamas, or other apparel items that would be fun to wear to your next company Christmas party, grab them as soon as possible. You can always store it in your attic and when you pull out your holiday items next year, you’ll be in for a surprise.
These clothing items are also fun to buy for stuffed animals and white elephant gifts.
9. Pet toys and treats
Your pet probably won’t care if he’s chewing on a candy cane-shaped bone in June or playing with a Santa-shaped squeaker toy in February. 😂 Look for pet clearance sales and stock up on treats if you think your pet will appreciate them before they expire.
10. Books and advent calendars
Books and coloring books are always a great gift idea, especially if you have kids who participate in book swaps at school. If you see reading material on sale (especially the popular Elf on the Shelf set), grab it and save it for next year.
Non-food advent calendars are also a popular item.
11. Stocking stuffers
You don’t have to buy candy right now to fill next year’s stockings, but you can fill your cart with discounted holiday pencils, stuffed animals, mugs, mini candles, travel games, crafts and activities, and more . Check out stocking stuffer ideas here!
Additionally, follow these additional tips to save:
Take advantage of store benefits.
Earn points by participating in store loyalty programs. If you’re already affiliated, you may be able to earn additional savings or use benefits to reduce purchasing costs.
Use and/or stack coupons.
Use coupons whenever possible to save even more on clearance items. Depending on the store, you may be able to stack coupons, but the amount you actually pay will be the minimum amount.
Please note our return, exchange, and price adjustment policies.
Be sure to choose a location where you can return items. It’s easy to get excited about a low price only to later discover that the product doesn’t fit, is damaged, or was offered cheaper elsewhere. Write down important dates in your planner so you don’t have to pay for items you don’t need.
Also, be aware if the return is in the form of a store credit or cash back. Also, if you’re shopping at a place where all sales are final, double-check the product before adding it to your cart.
Please keep your receipt.
Don’t get items you don’t want or need. Please retain your receipt to maximize your chances of receiving a refund or price adjustment.
Use a receipt scanner app.
Want to keep those items? Scan your receipts into your scanner app to earn a small amount of cash back.
Please use the store’s credit card.
If you have a store credit card, you can receive additional cash back on your purchases. We generally don’t recommend opening these types of accounts, but if you have one and it makes sense to do so, use it to get some of your clearance income back.
Choose free shipping or collection.
Avoid wasting time and paying shipping charges. If possible, take advantage of the store’s free delivery or pick-up service.
Make a list before you go.
Don’t buy just to buy. Write a list of the items you use most during your vacation so you know where to focus your attention. It’s okay to stray a little off your list, but writing down your needs will help you stay on track with your spending. Plus, you can use the list to look up prices at different stores, so you know where you’ll get the best deals before you go.
