ALBANY, GA (WALB) – If you’ve eaten at a restaurant or gotten takeout food in the past week, have you checked the restaurant’s report from the Department of Public Health?
Environmental health specialists from the Georgia Department of Public Health routinely inspect each establishment twice a year. These inspections evaluate food safety and overall cleanliness. Restaurants are given a score out of 100; a score below 70 is considered a failing grade.
Besides the overall score, there are two other important things to look out for in the report posted by a restaurant: Check the “Risk Factors” section and also look for areas of “non-compliance.”
If a restaurant fails an inspection, the owner is first provided with a detailed report of each violation.
If some violations are deemed “major,” the establishment is asked to correct them within 24-72 hours. A follow-up inspection is then conducted approximately 10 days after the initial inspection to ensure the establishment maintains corrective action for the major violations. If the restaurant does not correct these violations, it may be temporarily closed until it passes a reinspection.
Inspection scores and reports are publicly available and will be posted to the restaurant and on the Georgia Department of Public Health’s online portal.
