Compared to Wall Street tycoons, presidents don’t receive as much compensation while in power. Estimates are that the candidates are getting into the “serve the country” game, scoring extra grays and landing future book deals. But Kamala Harris isn’t necessarily banking on a potential new paycheck. Because she already has some wealth.
Forbes estimates that Harris’ net worth, along with her husband Doug Emhoff, is $8 million. Although Donald Trump’s secretive nature has sparked intense debate over his wealth, Harris remains more open about her finances than her opponent.
During the 2020 presidential campaign, Harris released 15 years of her personal tax returns. That was more than any of his opponents at the time, with the exception of President Biden, who released his tax returns as a result of his long political career, Forbes notes.
How much did Kamala Harris earn from her past jobs?
But most of her values don’t come from her time as a politician. Although her annual salary as vice president is $235,100, Harris earned less money as San Francisco’s district attorney and even less as state attorney general. As a senator, she earned $174,000 a year. Ms. Harris’ work as a writer has added to her wealth. She has earned over $500,000 in royalties for books she has written.
The real secret of her value lies in her LA wealth. Emhoff and Harris’ home was purchased in 2012 and has since grown in value from $1 million to $4.4 million in 2021, according to Forbes. Emhoff earned more than $1 million a year as an entertainment lawyer in 2019, so sharing the wealth isn’t a bad thing either, the outlet added.
According to Barron’s 2024 filing filed in May, Harris and Emholf have between $2.9 million and $6.6 million in investments, cash and retirement accounts. Thanks to her career in public service, Ms. Harris has been able to scrape together a pension, a dwindling benefit for her generation. According to Forbes magazine, she receives two pensions worth just under $1 million.
