This time of year, everyone is obsessed with pumpkin pie spice. Everything from pumpkin pie to homemade lattes is delicious, but apple pie spice is another fall favorite. Its intense flavor profile makes it a great addition to your spice cabinet.
What is apple pie spice?
This delicious blend of aromatic spices is often used to flavor apple pie and other apple dishes during the cooler months. It’s very similar to pumpkin pie spice, but my version leaves out the ground cloves and adds cardamom instead. Some people don’t like the flavor of cardamom, so you can omit it if you wish.
You can add a few teaspoons of apple pie spice to sweet desserts, but it’s equally suitable for savory dishes at home. This bacon apple chicken recipe is a great example.
apple spice ingredients
With only 5 ingredients, this spice recipe is simple and easy to put together. And fresh spices are much better than ready-made blends that have been on store shelves forever. Not only does it add a flavorful accent to your dishes, it also has many health benefits.
This blend contains warming herbs that are perfect for cold days. Spices also have antibacterial properties that ward off nasty viruses and bacteria that are prevalent this time of year.
Cinnamon helps balance blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, and regulate blood pressure. Ginger aids digestion, stimulates circulation, and is effective against illness, especially coughs. Another beneficial spice included in this blend is cardamom. Not only is it rich in antioxidants, it also lowers high blood pressure, reduces inflammation, and aids digestion.
How to use apple pie spice mix
There are so many delicious ways to use it that it’s hard to narrow it down!
Try adding apple pie spice to your homemade applesauce. I added some before canning, but the kids couldn’t get enough of it. Simmering spiced applesauce in a saucepan over low heat for several hours creates delicious apple butter. Add some to sliced apples and bake with almond flour puff pastry. Apple pie spice also goes well with apple, pear, and peach cobbler. Or try it in Berry Crisp. Make French toast with homemade sourdough bread (or homemade gluten/grain-free bread). Sprinkle the toast with apple pie spice and drizzle with a little maple syrup. Please use it as a topping for salted caramel latte. Add a little homemade whipped cream first for an even more decadent version. Add to homemade vanilla ice cream before stirring for fall-themed flavor. Use it to topping your apple pie! Use apple pie spice for more flavorful dishes, such as baked sweet potatoes, apple pork chops, and sausage-stuffed apples. Try adding it to your homemade apple cider. As a bonus, while it’s simmering, the house smells nice. Mix a small amount into waffle or pumpkin pancake batter before cooking. Top with sliced cooked apples and maple syrup.
