Fredonia’s Christian Cabrera is this week’s SUNYAC baseball athlete, while Cortland’s Louis Mithra is the pitcher of the week.
Cabrera led the Fredonia baseball team and started the season 4-1 by hitting .542 (13-24) with 11 RBIs, seven runs and five extra bass hits. He didn’t attack, he walked twice. After a 4-4 performance in a 9-1 victory at Keuka, Cabrera went 3-5 in each of the next four games. This included a 10-7 victory at Ohio Wesleyan, a 7-6 victory over Gwyned Mercy, a 7-4 victory over Rurgers-Newark, and a 21-14 defeat to Clarkson. His home run this week was a three-run explosion with Go-Ahead, who defeated 10-10 at that point before Clarkson fought back. He also had two triples and two doubles with a slugging rate of .917.
Misla scored a victory at national No. 7 Trinity University (Texas) on Friday after pitching six shutout innings in an 8-5 victory. He gave up five hits, hit eighth innings, and no one was walking. This is Mithra’s second Pitcher of the Week honor this season.

The Blue Devils continue their hot start
DAVENPORT, Fla. — Early down 6-1, the Fredonia State baseball team used clutch batting, aggressive base running and outstanding relief pitching to win an 8-7 victory over Vassar on Tuesday.
After scoring twice at the bottom of eight innings to beat the 6-6 tie, Vassar used one double and a triple to cut the lead into one run. On a 90-foot-away run, relief pitcher Connor Burkstone hit the final two batters and finished the game. He finished with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.
Left-handed reliever Nick Cypos helped set up the victory with a 4-1/3 inning relief, allowing only one hit and punching out two innings. He gave up one unfortunate run.
One came out at the eighth bottom, and a dirt strikeout first brought the throw. Brady Ventura plunged into the house with a slow, beating the tag and raising the demon. The play was set when Brady Ventura and Dominique Hickok performed double steals after a failed attempt at a victim bunt. Kyle Tedford went on to make his second RBI single for the necessary insurance. Tedford and Hickok both had two hits and two RBIs.
The Devils chased 6-1 at the bottom of the sixth inning when they exploded in five runs. The rally was keyed by a two-run base hit by Andrew Tucker.
Christian Cabrera and Alex Earlstrom also had two hits and doubles.
The Devils will face Wisconsin Eau Claire and Brockport today.

Day 3 ends with a heartbreaking loss
CLERMONT, Fla. — Fredonia’s bid to win the first game of the season ended with a heartbreaking 6-5 defeat to Hope College, the Legend Way Complex on Tuesday.
Early in the morning, the Blue Devils fell 4-0 to school 21 in Wisconsin Whitewater. Two losses reduced the Blue Devils to 0-6.
“There have been improvements in all three areas,” coach Tony Ciccarero said after the doubleheader. “We started playing at the beginning of the week that we didn’t make, and we started getting hits that we didn’t get early in the week. These are things we can build later in the week.”
Today’s idol, the Blue Devils, will face Amherst College on Thursday at 2pm, facing Simpson College after the first game is completed. Both games will take place at Hancock Park.
The Blue Devils took an early 4-0 lead, but hope regained on their sixth final four runs. The key hit was the three-run homer who lost pitcher Sabrina Edwards Smith. Fredonia starting pitcher Vanessa Galbraith left after four innings with a 5-2 lead.
This was the best offensive show ever. The Blue Devils received two hits from Maddie Devoir and Madison Row each. Each of them also had one RBI.
In the first game of the day, the Blue Devils and nationally ranked Wisconsin Whitewater were trapped in a 1-0 fight to the seventh top. Fredonia starting pitcher Kendal Phillips had his third strong show in the spring (the first two relief), but her team was unable to deliver key hits, especially early, leading to a loss. The Blue Devils stuck 10 runners, including a bass loaded twice.
“Kendall has made a huge addition to the pitching staff,” Siccarero said of SUNY Brockport’s move. “She’s suited to the culture and other pitchers took her to make her feel at home.”
