Westinghouse players take to the field before the Week 0 opener against the Beavers.
Over the past two seasons, the Westinghouse football program has proven itself to be a dominant force not only in the City League but across the state.
The Bulldogs are 27-2 in 2022 and 2023 combined, with both losses coming in the PIAA Class 2A championship game against Southern Columbia.
Westinghouse opens its 2024 home season on Thursday, hoping to avoid matching its losses from the past two years in the first two weeks.
Senior quarterback Khalil Green threw for 139 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 50 yards, but the Bulldogs lost 28-26 to the Beavers in their Week 0 season opener.
At Couples Stadium on the South Side, Westinghouse will open its Week 1 high school football schedule with a game against Linsley School of Wheeling, West Virginia.
This will be the season opener for the Cadets.
Last year, Linsley defeated Trinity 27-3 in a Week 7 game.
Not so small
Indiana may be a team worth keeping an eye on in the early stages of the 2024 WPIAL boys soccer season.
Last season, the Little Indians won just six games with a record of 6-11-1 and one tie overall, but finished fourth in Section 1-3A and qualified for the playoffs.
There, Indiana stunned Section 3-3A champion Bethel Park in the first round but lost 2-1 to Montour in the 3A quarterfinals.
This season, Indiana is off to a 3-0 start, including a 5-0 win over Obama Academy in Tuesday’s sectional opener.
On Thursday, the Little Indians visit a Knock team still searching for their first win.
The other two teams sharing the early lead in Section 1-3A with Indiana are Armstrong and Shaler.
The Riverhawks visit the Titans on Thursday.
The successes are countless
Section 2-2A boys soccer starts off with four teams tied at 1-0 after victories in their section openers on Tuesday.
All four will face off on Thursday.
Two of the four teams won by a landslide on Tuesday, which also marked the season opener.
Avonworth thumped Riverside, 12-0, and Keystone Oaks also beat Ellwood City, 12-0.
The battle for first place on Thursday will be a bit tougher for the Antelopes and Golden Eagles.
Avonworth will host Quaker Valley (1-2) in a battle of last year’s Section 4-2A co-champions, while Keystone Oaks will visit Central Valley (3-0).
