What are Christmas stockings? For young and old alike, there’s a special joy in waking up on Christmas morning to find your stocking lumpy with a little surprise. These healthy stocking stuffer ideas make the perfect gift for everyone on your list.
It’s always fun to pull out hidden items and reveal the little presents inside. Even if it’s something small like a pack of gum or something practical like a new fuzzy pair of socks. Having all these ideas in one big list will make your holiday shopping even easier (even if you miss out on Black Friday sales).
christmas stocking traditions
Thanks to the famous poem “The Night Before Christmas,” we learn that Christmas stockings “hung with care in chimneys” for more than 200 years. However, exactly how long ago this tradition began and why it has become so popular is not well known.
Most people agree that the tradition of wearing Christmas stockings honors St. Nicholas. He is an ancient Christian saint known for his generosity and gifts to those in need. He is the true supporter of today’s Santa tradition.
Legend has it that St. Nicholas heard about a widowed man who was unable to pay dowries for his three daughters. At the time, the situation was hopeless. Saint Nicholas dropped a gold coin down the widow’s chimney at night. One of the coins fell into one of the stockings that had been hung by the fire to dry. When the widower and his daughters found the coin the next morning, they were overjoyed and their worries were over.
The example of St. Nicholas continues to shape our ideas about the true spirit of Christmas today. My kids also participate in the St. Nicholas Day tradition of taking off their boots for “St. Nicholas Day.” Nick” packs candy every December 6th.

A fun twist on the stocking stuffer tradition. Instead of giving them all in one day, slip one new gift into their stocking every 12 days of the Christmas season. This traditionally lasts from December 25th until January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany. Your child will be looking forward to new surprises. And it will help you stay focused throughout the Christmas season.
