Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday encouraged Democratic staffers facing layoffs from the DNC, saying their “spirit will not be defeated.”
Harris made the comments Sunday at the DNC holiday celebration in Washington, D.C. She spoke at the event, along with President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, and invited staff members who were fired from the DNC after the election without severance pay.
“This holiday season, like any other time of the year, let us be truly conscious of all the blessings we have been given. Let us celebrate the blessings we have. Let’s celebrate the blessings we don’t have and move forward,” Harris said. “And let us always remember that our country is worth fighting for and our spirit will never be defeated.”
“And hear me out: That spirit, that spirit that drives the countless hours, days, months of work you put into this. That spirit will never be defeated. We Let’s be clear about that, we’re clear about why we’re in this situation, because you’re here now. Yes, you not only understand all of that, but you’re happy with it. You have to work hard and keep working hard,” she said.

Mr. Biden followed Ms. Harris on stage and defended the legacies of both men as they prepare to leave office. He argued that the country is in a “significantly” better position now than when he and Harris entered the White House.
“One of the things I’ve always believed about public service, especially the presidency, is the importance of asking ourselves, did we leave this country in better shape than we started it with? “Today, I can say with all my heart that from the bottom of my heart, the answer to that question is a resounding yes,” he said.

He went on to encourage staff to “stay involved” in the coming years.
“I’m not going anywhere, kid,” Biden said of Harris. “Because I won’t let you.”
Some DNC officials had expressed frustration with post-election cuts, which are relatively common in Washington, D.C. When the layoffs were announced in late November, the DNC union objected to the lack of severance pay and other benefits.

“I think it’s very cruel that DNC management is trying to claim that firings are just part of the job,” a DNC union member told Mother Jones. “And we feel strongly that losing an election does not absolve organizations of their responsibility to treat workers with basic dignity.”
DNC Chairman Jamie Harrison will not seek re-election, leaving leading leadership candidates to compete for the top spot.
The next chair will be chosen by the approximately 450 voting members of the national party committee, which will meet in National Harbor, Maryland, in early February for the DNC’s winter meetings.
