World leaders announced today that they had called Trump for the first time since his election victory.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he had had a “great meeting” with Trump and congratulated him on his “historic landslide victory.”
“We agreed to maintain close dialogue and advance cooperation,” President Zelensky said on the X program, adding, “Strong and unwavering American leadership is essential to the world and a just peace.”
Vance said that after continued Russian aggression, Ukraine will likely have to “cede some territory to the Russians” to end the war. President Trump and his team have made “America First” and increased isolationism overseas a key part of their foreign policy pitch.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also told X that he spoke by phone with President Trump for the first time since the election results.
“We have big plans for the future!” he said.
Mr. Orbán is a far-right leader who critics characterize as an authoritarian and has maintained close ties with Mr. Trump for years after he left office.
Separately, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on the X show that he had called President Trump to congratulate him on his “spectacular victory.”
“We look forward to working closely again to further strengthen India-US relations across technology, defence, energy, space and several other areas,” PM Modi said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office said in a statement that Trudeau congratulated President Trump on winning a second term and said, “Our two countries share a common commitment to safe and reliable supply chains and combating unfair trade practices in the global economy.” He announced that he had met with President Trump regarding his concerns.
Prime Minister Trudeau said in a statement that the United States and Canada have “the most successful partnership in the world.”
“We look forward to working with President-elect Trump and his administration, including on issues such as trade, investment, and continental peace and security,” he added.
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the call.
