UCF coach Gus Malzahn has resigned from the Knights to become Florida State’s new offensive coordinator, sources confirmed to CBS Sports’ John Talty. Malzahn compiled a 28-24 record in four seasons with the Knights, but suffered a losing streak after joining the Big 12.
“We would like to thank Coach Malzahn for his contributions to our football program over the past four seasons, including the transition to the Big 12 Conference,” a UCF spokesperson said in a statement released by the school. “We thank him for his professionalism and dedication to our student-athletes during his time at UCF and wish him and his wife Kristy all the best in their future endeavors.”
Malzahn is tasked with repairing Florida State’s offensive line, which struggled mightily during a lackluster campaign. A year after going 13-1 in the conference championship, the Seminoles mustered just 15.8 points per game against the ACC schedule and finished 131st nationally in total offense and scoring offense.
The Knights were seen as a potential dark horse to make the Big 12, but have struggled with quarterback issues. In 2024, four different players took the primary snaps as the Knights went just 2-7 in conference play and 4-8 overall. This is UCF’s worst record since 2015, which was George O’Leary’s last season as coach, going 0-12.
CBS Sports will update this breaking story as more information becomes available.
