Grupo Mirgol and Melia Hotels International partner to build a $50 million luxury hotel in Ushuaia, Argentina
Argentina’s Grupo Milgol and Spain’s Melia Hotels International have announced plans to build a five-star hotel in Ushuaia, Argentina. The luxury hotel will be operated under Melia’s Gran Melia brand. This operation is part of Grupo Mirgor’s business diversification strategy and efforts to revitalize Tierra del Fuego’s economy. At the same time, it is in line with Melia Hotels International’s goal of promoting qualitative and sustainable tourism in key destinations.
Melia Hotels International, recognized by Standard & Poor’s Global as Europe’s most sustainable hotel company, will bring its extensive management experience and valuable Gran Melia brand to the project. Grupo Mirgor will develop the project, which will later be managed by Meliá Hotels.
The hotel is an investment of more than $50 million and is scheduled to open in 2028. Once completed, it will be the southernmost property managed by the hotel group globally.
The hotel will have 200 guest rooms, two restaurants, a bar and lobby bar, and an auditorium that can seat 800 people. Other amenities include indoor and outdoor pools, a first-class spa, fully equipped gym, gazebo, and winter garden.
The initiative aims to strengthen local tourism infrastructure and services, with a focus on corporate and cultural tourism. The hotel is expected to create approximately 200 new jobs and foster the development of a local supplier network to meet the hotel’s needs for goods and services.
José Luis Alonso, CEO of Grupo Mirgor, emphasized the collaborative vision of the project and underlined the pivotal role of Melia Hotels International. Meanwhile, Gabriel Escaler Jaume, Chairman and CEO of Melia Hotels International, expressed his enthusiasm for the strategic partnership with Grupo Milgol and the potential of the company’s luxury brands in Argentina.
Gustavo Melera, Governor of Tierra del Fuego, emphasized the importance of private sector investment in the state and expressed his belief that such hotels would benefit the tourism industry.
Melia Hotels International operates four hotels in Argentina, including Gran Melia Iguazu, which has been named Argentina’s Best Hotel for the third year in a row at the World Travel Awards.
