Google is experimenting with a top card format for shopping and e-commerce related queries and information, which displays product results with prices on the left, popular stores on the right, and review content in the form of content and videos to the right of that.
Brodie Clark noticed this and posted some examples on both X and SERP Notes. Brodie wrote, “Google is currently testing a full-width rich card section at the top of search results for e-commerce queries. This is the first time Google is introducing this rich card treatment to the e-commerce segment, where it first started appearing for celebrity names in 2022 and has since expanded to other query segments.” Yes, he’s right. I’ve seen this treatment in many other use cases, but never in product, shopping, or e-commerce related search results.
Below is one of his screenshots.
Here’s what you’ll see for this query:
Personally, I would prefer a card format for this query over what we currently get.
Brody added:
Interestingly, the top 8 organic product grids are listings that tend to appear further down the page, which can greatly increase the visibility of the products featured there and have a notable impact on CTR.
The rich results section also displays a top 5 list of popular stores by default, and the right column of rich cards also displays informational content and links to other category pages.
Optimizing merchant listing results will continue to be a key part of ecommerce SEO in 2024 and beyond, and this desktop test further reinforces the benefits for online stores to maintain a merchant listing strategy.
