Steve DiMeglio, an American golf journalist and longtime writer for Golfweek and USA TODAY, has died of cancer at the age of 63.
DiMeglio previously covered baseball before switching to golf in 2002 and has been a fixture at PGA Tour events and major championships for nearly 20 years.
After being diagnosed with cancer in 2022, she chronicled her battle with cancer, including dozens of chemotherapy treatments, for her followers on social media.
A graduate of Mankato West High School in Minnesota and then Minnesota State University, DiMeglio began his journalism career at the Palm Springs Desert Sun in 1994. He moved to Gannett-owned USA TODAY in 2000 and became the paper’s full-time golf reporter a few years later. Gannett acquired Golfweek in 2016, and Dimeglio’s byline began appearing in Golfweek in 2019, where he continued to write until 2023.
Throughout his career as a journalist, DiMeglio developed a close working relationship with Tiger Woods, covering him since he turned pro in 1996. Following the shocking news of his death, Tiger Woods, who won 15 majors, led the effort to pay tribute to DiMeglio. on social media.
“Unfortunately, the world of golf lost a member of our family today, beloved golf writer Steve DiMeglio,” Woods wrote. “I’ve always been very good friends with Steve and we texted and talked about how he needed to keep fighting to get better so we could meet up in the Bahamas last month. And we did. Thank you so much. This is a very sad day for the entire golf community. We have truly lost a friend.”
The PGA Tour also announced the passing of Dimeglio, who a spokesperson said was “beloved by the players.”
