NEWULM – New Ulm Cathedral boys basketball coach Alan Wotas was rather insensitive to his team’s performance against Gibbon Fairfax Wintrop in a Tomahawk division game on Tuesday night.
“We just got outplayed.” He said. “They beat us with defensive and offensive endings. We were late all night, because we started slowly.”
It gave a compelling 64-41 victory for the Thunderbirds.
Cole Jacobsen led GFW (8-13, 5-8) with a game-high 35 points, while Easton Taylor added 12.
“Good night when we filmed basketball.” GFW head coach Ryan Jacobson said. “We just wanted to be patient and try to try and deepen the watch a little bit deeper. When we’re struggling, we shoot quickly and when those shots go, it’s great But when they don’t go, you have to deepen your watch and protect them a little.
“I thought the guys were patient and did an amazing job of getting multiple ball inversions. It was a night when we were able to beat some from the surroundings.”
Brock Carlson led the Cathedral (9-13, 7-8) with 10 points.
GFW jumped to a fast 11-0 lead before Carlson scored the first Greyhound point of the game.
However, the Thunderbirds led 20-8 with two free throws from Clayton Kalk.
“We struggled to make shots and the length of the shots bothered us.” Uetus said. “We need to get better and find a way to get ourselves in a better place to win basketball.”
Woitas said slow start has become the norm in the last few games for Greyhounds.
“We were 19-1 to start our last game and this game was 11-0.” He said. “We can’t come in playoff time and we’re hoping to get into the game. So we need to understand that and there are four games to do that.”
Cole Jacobson was the biggest thorn for the Greyhounds, as he scored 16 of the Thunderbirds’ 35 halftime points.
The Greyhounds, who cut GFW’s lead to 35-28, saw the deficit grow as the shortage scored as the Thunderbirds had to open the game.
They kicked out Cathedral 16-8 to get a three-cap 51-36 lead from Taylor.
Meanwhile, the Greyhound tried to get back into the game with a 3-point shot, but missed all 15 shots beyond the arc.
“We had a hard time getting the ball.” Uetus said. “We had a hard time getting the flow, so we need to move the ball better and attack the hoop to finish the move.”
Coach Jacobson said his team’s defensive focus was on the Cathedral’s three-point shooter, which paid off.
“That was our focus, Finstad and Andersons, I saw them fill it up.” Director Jacobson said. “I’ve seen them get hot and they’re just going to shoot you out of the gym. So we’ll pay special attention to these three and bounce the ball back a few times tonight. I did it.”
GFW took a 60-37 lead with two free throws from Cole Jacobson after the 6-foot-7 junior added two more baskets to finish the game.
“We got away from their two best players a little bit and got away from us a bit, and we didn’t shoot the ball well.” Uetus said. “But we had to find a path defensively to stay and we didn’t do that tonight. And we need to understand why the game is slower.”
The Greyhound will be in Springfield on Thursday, and the Thunderbirds will host Wabasso on Thursday.
