Garfield County’s five-team state playoffs began last week. Glenwood (7-6-3) ended its season Thursday with a 6-3 loss at home to Montrose, and Grand Valley also was eliminated in the first round with a 6-0 loss to Fountain Valley. Roaring Fork (11-3-2), Rifle (11-3-2), and Coal Ridge (10-4-2) all had wins. The Rams and Bears will host a second-round game on Tuesday, with the Titans playing Kent Denver on the road the same day.

All Garfield County football teams except Glenwood Springs ended their seasons Friday night. The Demons (5-4) traveled to Steamboat on Saturday afternoon and lost to the Sailors by a 17-6 decision. Glenwood comes to Palisade on Friday. Coleridge (5-4) lost 22-7 to Delta on Friday, ending the Titans’ slim playoff hopes. Roaring Fork (3-6) lost at home to North Fork 41-6. Grand Valley (2-7) lost to No. 1-ranked Meeker in the state, 53-6. The rifle was idle. Basalt won the 2A league title with a win over Aspen and continued its undefeated march into the fall season. The Longhorns will enter the state playoffs this weekend as one of the top-seeded teams.

The Glenwood girls (16-6) will advance to the 4A state playoffs this weekend. The Demons lost 3-2 in their final league game against Battle Mountain on Tuesday, but won two of three games in the Coleridge Tournament over the weekend. Roaring Fork (9-13) ended its season Tuesday with a 3-0 loss at home to North Fork. Coleridge (11-12) defeated Valley 2-0 on Saturday. Rifle (2-21) closed out the year with a loss to Pagosa Springs on Saturday.
cross country
The state cross country meet was held Saturday in Colorado Springs. Rifle’s Anna Robinson finished 18th overall in the girls’ 4A class with a 5k time of 19 minutes, 36 seconds. The Rifle senior capped off a solid season in which he was near the top of the state’s best all season. In Class 3A, the Cole Ridge girls placed seventh overall with Effie Fletcher leading the way in 15th place with a time of 19:50. Haley Whitman (20:26, 32nd), Faye Goodman (21:03, 49th), Riley Hedberg (22:22, 87th), Ashley Sanders (22:55, 98th) ) took the lead. The Titan Boys finished 15th as a team. Jake Kurt (17:24, 35th place), Owen Evans (17:58, 71st place), Jesse Richell (18:35, 94th place), Kevin Parker (18:50, 102nd place), Brody Evans (18:52, 105th place) These were the top runners.
In Class 2A, Grand Valley’s Craig Cotter was 29th overall with a time of 17 minutes, 50 seconds. The girls from Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale had an outstanding performance, coming in sixth place as a team. Genevieve Vickers (21:21, 22nd), Kayla Steele (21:25, 23rd) and Abigail O’Keefe (22:29, 46th) powered the top finishes.
