The Glenwood Demons improved to 1-1 on the season with a commanding 35-13 home win at Stabler Memorial Field on Friday night. Running back Mason Markovich led the way to the non-league victory with 219 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Glenwood returns to action this Saturday afternoon on their home field, taking on Northridge (Greeley) at 1 p.m.
The push to promotion to 3A was tough for the Rifle Bears on Friday night in Grand Junction. The host Tigers shut out the Bears, 48-0. Junction scored 35 points in the second quarter, including two touchdowns on defense. Rifle will look to bounce back when it hosts Basalt on Friday night.
Returning to college football after a one-year hiatus, the Roaring Fork Rams picked up a close 14-13 win at Ellicott on Friday night. The 1A Rams will face Yuma at Carbondale on Friday night. Coal Ridge (0-1) and Grand Valley (0-1) both did not play this week.
volleyball
The Glenwood girls team (4-1) continued to look like an early season favorite with a 3-0 win over Basalt on Thursday night at Chavez Spencer Gym. Glenwood is off until Saturday, when it will host St. Mary’s Academy.
After a win at Vail Mountain on Wednesday night, the Roaring Fork Rams (2-4) lost to the Steamboat Sailors 3-0 on Friday night in Carbondale. The Rams will host rival Basalt on Thursday night.
The Cole Ridge girls team (2-5) beat North Fork 3-0 on Thursday night at Hotchkiss, then the Titans made a trip to Gunnison on Saturday afternoon and lost to the unbeaten Cowboys 3-1.
Grand Valley (3-3) lost 3-0 at Rangely on Friday. The Cardinals will play again on Tuesday at Plateau Valley.
The Rifle Bears (0-4) didn’t do much over the weekend.

Glenwood (2-0-1) had a hard-fought game against Coleridge on Friday night, but it was the Demons who came out victorious, 2-1. On Saturday afternoon, the Demons beat Frontier Academy, 1-0. Glenwood travels on the road on Tuesday to face Battle Mountain in a league match.
Unbeaten Rifle (3-0) defeated Montrose 2-1 on Thursday. The Bears’ next game is Sept. 12 against Roaring Fork in Rifle.
Speaking of the RF Rams, they had the weekend off in preparation for a trip to Basalt to face the Longhorns on Thursday.
Softball
The Rifle Bears (4-2) played Montrose in a doubleheader at home on Friday. The Bears won the first game, 8-2, but lost the second game, 11-9. Rifle will host Palisades on Tuesday.
cross country
Cole Ridge’s boys and girls had great performances at the Grand Mesa Invitational on Friday, with both teams taking first place as a team. Owen Evans led the Titans boys in 20 minutes, 32 seconds, taking second place overall in the meet. Finishing in the top 10 for the Cole Ridge boys were Kevin Parker (21:07, third place), Jake Kurt (21:12, fourth place) and Brody Evans (21:28, eighth place). The Titans are currently ranked ninth in the state Class 3A cross country poll.
On the girls side, Coleridge’s championship contingent was led by meet winner Effie Fletcher (22:16, 1st place), Haley Whitman (25:17, 13th place), Faye Goodman (25:22, 14th place), Riley Hedberg (25:23, 15th place) and Dani Kurt (25:59, 18th place).
Coleridge are off until Friday 13th September, when they will host their own invitational match at VIX Park in Newcastle.
The Glenwood Demons finished second as a team at the Grand Mesa Invitational. Top runners for the Demons were Ty Hesse (21:13, 6th place), Tanner Merritt (21:14, 7th place), Finn Long (21:34, 9th place) and Eli Meyer (23:03, 20th place). Glenwood returns to the road and trails this Saturday at the Eagle Valley Invitational.
The Glenwood girls finished fifth as a team on the Grand Mesa trails, with Quinn Wahler (24:22, 9th place) and Eva Hassell (29:23, 29th place) pacing the Demons. The rifles competed in the Battle Mountain Husky Invitational on Saturday, but meet results had not been released as of press time.
