It’s a fashion crime.
A French luxury clothing brand has ripped off the New York Young Republicans Club logo and pasted it onto sweatshirts it sells for $1,399.
On the secondary market, a piece of clothing sold for $2,500, with some sellers fetching as much as $15,000.
Enfants Riches Déprimés (a luxury fashion house that translates to “depressed rich kids”) is currently promoting a tan port-collar sweatshirt on its website, but it’s sold out.
An oversized raglan sleeve crew neck sweatshirt made from medium-weight loop terry. Ribbed cuffs and waistband. Artwork printed on the front. There is a patch repair on the sleeve. Distinctive vintage wash processing. Made in the USA,” the website advertises.
The front of the shirt features the Republican Club’s signature bald eagle. The clothing brand is based on the Latin phrase “pro deo e patria,” which means “for God and country,” and “forum libertum oeconomia libera,” which means “free forum, free economy.” Added.
And, leaving nothing to the imagination, the front of the sweatshirt has the words “Young Republican Club of New York” embroidered in the regal Times New Roman font.
However, the 113-year-old club is no fun.
“The Young Republicans Club of New York cannot stand by and watch brands steal, sell, or damage our intellectual property. “We look forward to defending our rights and pursuing legal action against them and their affiliates,” a club spokesperson said.
“I wish they had consulted us before they stole it,” said Lucian Wintrich, the club’s press committee who first discovered it. “It shows that conservatism is a kind of counterculture and punk rock again.”
Once considered a far-right backwater in deep-blue New York City, the club has grown rapidly, from just 40 members in 2019 to more than 1,600 today.
President-elect Trump spoke at the club’s annual gala last year and received a hero’s welcome. Club chairman Gavin Wax is widely expected to take over the managerial role at some point over the next four years.
