Isak Andic, the founder of Spanish clothing retailer Mango, one of Europe’s largest fashion groups with around 2,800 stores worldwide, died in an accident on Saturday, the company announced.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected death of Isak Andic, non-executive chairman and founder of Mango,” Toni Ruiz, CEO of the Barcelona-based company, said in a statement. It’s regrettable.”
“Issac was a role model for all of us. He dedicated his life to Mango and left an indelible mark thanks to his strategic vision, inspiring leadership and unwavering commitment to the values he himself instilled in our company. ” he added.
The company did not disclose details of the accident. According to Spanish media, a 71-year-old man died after falling while hiking with several family members near Barcelona.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said in a social media post: “My condolences go to the family of Mango founder Isaq Andić, who tragically died in the Salnitre de Corbat cave accident.” said. He added: “I would like to express my love and respect to you for your great work and business vision in turning this Spanish company into a world leader in fashion.”
Mango’s origins date back to 1984, when Turkish-born Andic, with the help of his brother Nahman, opened his first store on Barcelona’s famous shopping street, Paseo de Gràcia.
It was a great success. Spain had just emerged from decades of dictatorship, which ended with the death of General Francisco Franco in 1975, and consumers were looking for more modern clothing.
“His departure leaves a huge void, but we are all in some way his legacy and a witness to his accomplishments. It’s up to us and this is the greatest thing we can do for Isaac.” It’s a tribute and we’re going to make it happen, ensuring that Mango continues to be a project that Isaac aspires to and that he’s proud of,” Lewis said.
According to its website, Mango has a strong presence in more than 120 markets around the world and employs 15,500 people, cementing its position as one of the world’s leading fashion groups.
