Thick fog has engulfed Delhi and adjoining areas in northern India, causing travel delays and disruption.
More than 100 flights were delayed at Delhi airport on Friday morning, news agency PTI reported. Dozens of trains have also been rescheduled or delayed.
The India Meteorological Department said foggy conditions are likely to persist for the next few days.
During this period, Delhi and other parts of northern India experience severe cold waves and dense fog is common.
Photos and videos showed several cities shrouded in heavy fog and haze.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said around nine airports, including Delhi’s, had zero visibility on Friday morning.
Delhi Airport has issued a warning to passengers that there may be significant delays.
“While take-offs and landings continue at Delhi Airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may be affected,” the airport said in a statement, referring to its radar system that enables automatic landings in cases of very poor visibility. There is,” he said.
Several airlines also issued statements urging travelers to check flight schedules before planning a trip.
IMD considers fog to be “dense” when visibility is below 200 meters and “very dense” when visibility is below 50 meters.
The weather department said light to moderate rain is likely to occur in Delhi on January 6 and the temperature may drop further.
