Fan favorite Boban Marjanovic is leaving the NBA to play for Fenerbahce in Turkey’s EuroLeague, EuroShops and ESPN are reporting.
The terms of Marjanovic’s contract with the Turkish team were not reported.
Marjanovic, 36, played nine NBA seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets, spending the past two seasons with Houston.
Marjanovic, a 7-foot-4 center, has seen limited playing time with his NBA team. He started in 25 of his 331 games and averaged 5.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 8.7 minutes per game. He appeared in just 14 games for the Rockets last season, averaging 5.1 minutes per game. The Houston Chronicle reports that Marjanovic is not in the team’s plans for next season.
Marjanovic’s sense of humor and outgoing personality matched his on-court physique, endearing him to fans throughout the league. In the final game of last season’s regular season against his former team, the Clippers, Marjanovic intentionally missed the second of two free throws late in the game, kicking off a free chicken sandwich campaign, much to the delight of the crowd and the play-by-play announcers.
He made a cameo appearance as the villain in the action film series John Wick, battling the protagonist played by Keanu Reeves.
The Serbian-born Marjanovic played multiple seasons in European leagues before joining Spurs in 2015. He was named Serbian Super League MVP three times between 2013 and 2015.
