Autumn River — It’s the season that keeps on giving.
The new year has arrived, but Christmas celebrations continue in Fall River, especially among the small business community.
Last month, Christopher’s eateries launched a holiday window display contest. Owner Christopher Silvia challenged his fellow business owners and managers to spread the magic of Christmas throughout the city by decorating their storefronts in December.
During the holiday season, approximately 24 participating properties put up wreaths, pruned trees, threw tinsel and created a festive scene that is a feast for the eyes and soul.
But only a few truly shine, with five honorees recognized for their efforts to make Fall River fun.
Councilor Linda Pereira, who supported the competition, visited winning businesses during New Year’s week and handed out prizes. In addition to bragging rights, the winners also received a certificate and a share of $1,000 in prize money.
Taking top honors was Olivia’s Floral & Gifts, where judges chased the North Star over the Nativity scene in its storefront at 700 Bedford Street.
A tie for second place went to Ray’s Flower Shop, located at 1826 South Main Street, with its cozy and elegant fireplace, and Patenaud Jewelers, located at 1473 South Main Street, with its charming arctic characters.
TJ’s Music, whose eye-catching South Main storefront is adorned with brightly lit wreaths, and Shelley’s Place, 13 North Main Street, which features a classic Peanuts-themed winter scene, tied for third place. .
Pereira said five people from the community were chosen to serve as judges from different parts of the city. Winners were chosen based on their creativity. Olivia received $500 for first place, each second place winner received $150, and each third place winner received $100.
The prize money was donated by Baycoast Bank’s Rico Conforti, Christopher’s Mayor Paul Coogan, attorney Lena Brown and others who wish to remain anonymous.
Businesses themselves could enter the contest, but most nominations came from customers and passersby who were amazed by the impressive displays, she said.
“They were surprised that people were paying attention to their exhibit… They were very happy,” Pereira said of the finalists’ reactions to their win.
“Hopefully, we can continue to do different activities like this and get people involved in doing something positive for the community,” Pereira added.
