It’s hard to imagine two political candidates occupying points further apart on the political spectrum than Donald Trump and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
But as parts of Ocasio-Cortez’s all-blue district in New York City draw support from both the far-right Republican president-elect and the House’s most outspoken progressive, the congresswoman took to Instagram on Sunday night to share with her followers. I asked him what inspired him. Vote for both.
“It’s really simple…Trump and you care about the working class,” one person responded.
“Trump is trying to get us the money and give men a voice. You are amazing and have great passion!” another said.
“Trump and you both feel real,” a third person wrote.
In 2020, Trump won just 22% of the vote in Ocasio-Cortez’s district, which covers parts of the Bronx and Queens. In 2024, he won by 33%, according to a report in the New York Post.
Since Ocasio-Cortez won 68.9% of the vote and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris won 65% (almost a 4-point difference), it would logically be logical that at least some of these voters would vote for Ocasio-Cortez. That means pulling the lever on both Mr. Trump and Mr. Trump.
A closer look at precinct data shows that Corona’s Queens borough, for example, supports both Republican billionaires and Democratic working-class family advocates.
In a Live Story on her Instagram account, Ocasio-Cortez said that races like hers, where House Democratic candidates outperformed the top-ranking Democratic candidate, are “very hard for us to dig into.” “It’s a rich environment.”
“As a matter of fact, let’s do this now. ‘If you voted for Donald Trump and me, we’d love to hear from you,'” she said, adding that she also added a section for followers to directly respond to the article. Added.
“Compared to the rest of Washington, D.C., I think you both are outsiders and weaker than the ‘establishment,’” one person responded.
Some said they voted against Harris, blaming President Joe Biden for not ending the war in Gaza.
“(Trump) talks about war being bad,” one person wrote. “The Democratic Party has become the party of war.”
Of course, AOC/Trump voters are a small portion of the electorate, and New York is a solidly liberal state at this point, so some Democrats felt safe casting a “protest vote” against the war. Maybe.
But if some of Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s fans, not just voters but even people who like her enough to follow her personal Instagram account, support Mr. Trump, it means that the Democratic Party Another sign that there is much work to be done.
Ocasio-Cortez seems to be wasting no time. On Monday, she asked her followers a series of additional questions.
“People who voted for Trump: What places and accounts do they follow for information and news?”
