The Minot High School Magicians started off the 2024-2025 season with two non-conference wins and one conference win in the opening week of games as they traveled around town to face off against local rivals.
The Minot North Sentinels started the season with two non-conference losses and one conference loss in the first week of varsity play.
Records and rankings didn’t matter when the two teams met. The two teams had known each other as football buddies for years before Minot North High School opened its doors this year. The older, more experienced Magicians, with a 3-0 record, won this historic first matchup 6-0.
The Sentinels have improved defensively in their first three games and that was on display for nearly the first 30 minutes against the Magicians. Minot High School got off to a pair of shots early on but didn’t get close to scoring until the 17-18 minute mark when senior Cale Workman scored an unassisted goal to give Minot High a 1-0 lead.
Just a minute and a half later, senior Kyle Ecklund scored his second goal off a pass from junior Drew Bollender, extending the Magicians’ lead to 2-0 at that point.
With just under three minutes left in the first half, Minot North High School goalkeeper sophomore Griffin Waldo blocked a shot that ricocheted off the top of the crossbar and into the feet of a waiting senior Nathan Wistisen, who scored on the rebound to give Minot High a 3-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, sophomore Dylan Oswalt passed the ball to senior Dylan Jackson, also of Dylan, to open the scoring. Sophomore Tayson Solper assisted freshman Grayson Steele for Minot High School’s second goal of the second half. Workman added an unassisted second goal to make it 6-0.
Minot High School will travel to Mandan on Saturday, Aug. 24, while Minot North High School will host Bismarck Legacy High School on the same day.
