Former Bolivian President Evo Morales said on Sunday that his car was shot at and denounced an attempt on his life.
Video he posted on social media showed at least two bullet holes in the windshield of the car where Morales was sitting in the front seat.
Morales’ Socialist Movement (Mass) party said in a statement that men in black opened fire as the vehicle passed in front of the barracks. The party blamed the government of President Luis Arce.
Mr. Arce condemned the violence in politics and promised an investigation.
Both men belong to the ruling Mass Party. However, since both parties announced their intention to run as candidates for the Mass Party in the 2025 presidential election, their relationship has deteriorated and their relationship has become even more strained.
Morales claimed the attack was a “joint operation between the military and police.” He added that the bullet missed by “a few centimeters” and injured the driver of the car.
Morales said the attack occurred near the base of the Bolivian Army’s 9th Division near Villa Tunari in central Bolivia.
The pro-Morales faction of the Mas Party claimed that the leaders of the attack entered the barracks before being evacuated by military helicopter.
“This is not an isolated incident, but clear proof that we are facing a fascist government,” the group said in a statement.
Morales, who served as president from 2006 to 2019, faces legal problems, including investigation into statutory rape and human trafficking charges, which he denies.
For weeks, his supporters blocked major roads across the country and clashed with police.
Morales has said the accusations are part of a right-wing vendetta against him by the interim president who replaced him after he resigned in 2019 amid allegations of voter fraud.
He and Arce have a group of loyal supporters who take to the streets to show their support for the candidates and, in some cases, engage in street brawls.
