EU households should stockpile critical supplies to last 72 hours to resilient in the face of conflict and catastrophe, the Commission said.
It was recommended on Wednesday in the EU Prepared Coalition strategy for multiple risks, including current geopolitical tensions, the possibility of armed attacks on member states, natural disasters and cyberattacks.
Why is it important?
The committee’s advice shows how seriously the EU is looking at the potential dangers faced by member states during the current uncertainty period, indicating its determination to “enhance Europe’s ability to prevent new threats and respond to them.”
Precautions also reflect the preliminary measures after President Donald Trump’s administration called on European countries to spend more on the defence of the continent, and the rift between the US and Europe, and the fear that it might separate the US from NATO or seriously undermine the alliance.

According to the committee’s strategy, the public should “encourage the public to “adopt practical measures, such as maintaining a minimum of 72 hours of essential supplies in emergencies,” as part of promoting population preparation.
Survival Lessons also say they should be integrated into the school curriculum along with the EU preparation day.
With the title of protecting essential social functions in Europe, the strategy calls for the implementation of minimal preparatory standards among key services such as hospitals, schools, transportation and communications.
Critical equipment and materials need to be stockpiled, and countries need to focus on the availability of “climate adaptation,” particularly “critical natural resources such as water.”
The strategy said it responds to “increasing geopolitical tensions and conflicts, hybrid and cybersecurity threats, foreign information manipulation and interference, and increased climate change and natural disasters.”
“The EU must be prepared to protect important social functions that are important to citizens, democracy and everyday life,” it said.
