IRON MOUNTAIN – The Kingsford hockey team canceled its season opener Tuesday night in what was a memorable game for the team.
Kingsford was brutally dominated on home ice by Escanaba in embarrassing fashion, 9-0 in two periods.
“I was expecting a fight and a close game.” said Friverse head coach Greg Wadge. “We didn’t do anything we did in practice. We had 16 guys who didn’t want the puck.
“We coughed like 25 times in neutral zone. We didn’t cause any offense. We couldn’t get into the zone as well as we wanted to. We were bad from start to finish. Responsible for that performance. I was clearly not ready.”
The Eskimos outscored the Frivers 24-7 as juniors Graham Johnson, Carson Hughes and senior Cale Carter each scored two goals. Junior goaltender Callie Hayes shut out Escanaba despite receiving little offense.
Kingsford suffered the loss as junior goaltender Nate Scallon gave up five points on 13 shots. Freshman Alex Hemgren was also dominated, stopping just seven of the 11 shots he took.
