The News-Press selects players who stood out over the past week based on a combination of coaches’ reports and school recommendations sent to sports@news-press.com and our own coverage. These athletes take part in a poll every Monday on news-press.com where readers can vote for the athlete they think did the best job. The winner of “The News-Press Athlete of the Week” voting sponsored by Elevate Home Services will receive a T-shirt provided by BSN Sports and a tote bag provided by USA Today High School Sports Awards. To learn more about the winners, The News-Press will conduct a Q&A session with each athlete.
This week’s News-Press Athlete, sponsored by Elevate Home Services, Sept. 23-28, was Cape Coral swimmer Hayden Tedamus. Junior received 2,052 votes or 59%. To earn his spot on the ballot, Tedhams placed second in the 500 free at the Florida Swims Foundation Invitational Swim Meet in Ocala and won the 200 free and 500 free at the meet against North Fort Myers.
VOTE: Be named Elevate Home Services’ News Press Athlete of the Week from September 30th to October. 5
Question: How did you start swimming?
Teddams: I think I was ultimately forced to swim, probably just because my parents were swimmers. But I loved this sport because I loved it. It’s fun.
What is your most memorable moment so far as a high school swimmer?
Teddams: Probably second and first year at State University. Because I got to experience the team and everything else. So I thought that would be fun.
What are your goals for this season?
Teddams: I would like to win a medal at each state. Of course, the goal will be to qualify for state first.

Do you have any pre-competition routines or superstitions to get you ready to swim?
Teddams: I eat a lot, usually eggs, lots of eggs, and bagels. I like bagels.
What are your plans after high school?
Teddams: I want to go to college. I’ve already talked to a few people, so getting into college is probably the best thing to do.
