Wintersville – Indian Creek High School played the host of Edison in their latest matchup in Hardwood on February 7th, but everyone won in a unified sport.
The purpose of the event was to celebrate the inclusion as a mixed team of students with intellectual and other disabilities who play alongside intellectual students. The team maintained a very friendly rivalry in the name of fun and fellowship throughout the 45-minute basketball game, but Creek ultimately managed to win with a score of 52-36.
Indian Creek’s Braden Stewart once again led the scoreboard with 18 points. “Smiley” Eddie led Edison with 15 points. Paul Sweeney, of Edward Jones’ investment, donated the MVP basketball given to each team. Edison went to Edison, Olivia Alto, Gabe Crosskey, Jadin Carlson and James Boncutter. Other team members include Misha Amys, Caleb Manion, Alex Fabian, Jaysenette, Parker Heath, Ethan Star, Ty Banfield, Lanespieth, Braiden Taylor, Anthony Riley, Bailey Brown and Makaila Crouch, as well as the Redskins, as well as Nadiade. Noon, Malina Bright Bright, J.D. Henderson, Page Somerville and Zach Kunz are with coaches Kyle Long, Sofia Henderson and Clayton Boknevitz of the Wildcats.

And the players agreed that the scores really didn’t matter.
“it’s good,” Manion said, adding that he enjoys being part of the team. “I’m happy to be able to participate in a unified sport for the development of our students.”
“I think it’s cool.” Added Creek student Austin Moore. “People with disabilities don’t always get the opportunity to do this. These games help them.”
“I love you, Somerville, a member of the EHS Leadership Council who played for the team, commented. “It’s really fun. It feels like everyone is so happy together, and the name ‘Unification’ really means a lot. ”
“It feels good” Eddy has been added. “This was my first time.”
Tom Mort, the unified sports coordinator for Indian Creek, said the game is a perfect example of what it means to include.
“It was amazing. The students were supportive and the kids had a great time.” He said. “Their smiles were better than the basketball.”
Jason Ensinger, Edison’s unified sports coordinator, reflected those feelings.
“We love being able to participate in this and are happy to see a uniform sport in school. We hope that it will lead to more activities.” Ensinger has been added. “This is the first time I’ve played basketball and I want to hold games at school and at school. I know that our students want it.”
Although no definitive dates have been set yet, Ensinger added that the school will be able to participate in a unified track competition this spring at EHS in Richmond. Edison held similar events in Creek and Buckeye locals last year. Meanwhile, Indian Creek has played soccer and basketball games in the past. Most notably at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Bright Promise School, and the Steubenville and Buckeye local schools.
