Make cute and simple sourdough starter jar Christmas ornaments for the sourdough baker in your life!
Where are my sourdough friends? 🍞
I’m so excited to share this easy and cute mini mason jar ornament that looks like a small sourdough starter. A great frugal DIY craft to make for yourself or give out to friends and family who love sourdough. Made using 4oz mini mason jars and a white kitchen sponge, this is so adorable!
This is my first time making sourdough bread this year and I love it!
Honestly, the most satisfying feeling is making beautiful bread for my family. It’s very easy to make once you understand the timing and steps. It is important to have a strong Sadow starter. You can order sourdough starter online, get it from a friend, or make it yourself.
This is my actual jar of sourdough starter!
I’ve been making it myself for about a month now, and I bought some from a 20-year-old woman in my neighborhood. Hip2Save owners Collin and his sister Bryn are also big into sourdough baking. We have been happily chatting about sourdough and we all use the same everyday sourdough recipe from Emile Raffa.
I also just started reading her book Artisan Sourdough Made Simple and I love it.
DIY Sourdough Starter Jar Ornament
1
Trace a bottle of white sponge and cut it out for the “starter”. Put it in a jar. You can also cut a white kitchen scrubber as shown.
2
Place a rubber band around the jar. Cut a circle of cloth or fabric larger than the jar lid, about 3 to 4 inches.
3
Drill some holes in the lid and secure twine to hang it on the tree.
4
Close the lid, fabric side down. Preferably labeled as sourdough starter.
Additional tips for making this sourdough starter ornament:
I experimented using both a white kitchen sponge and a white mesh dish scrubber. I love how they both turned out! Labels are optional. You can write them by hand or use a Bluetooth label maker like I did. I love using this because I can create labels in no time.
What a cute and easy little decoration idea! I couldn’t be happier. This was my first holiday craft project of the year. I can’t wait to give it away. My mom is also addicted to making sourdough, so I’m planning on getting one for her too.
This ornament inspired an entire baking-related Christmas tree in my kitchen. A vintage mixing bowl I bought at Goodwill a few years ago is the perfect base. This tree makes me so happy!
