ROYSBURG — Despite falling behind early, Northern Bedford finished the regular season with 34 points in a 34-7 win over Glendale on Friday night at Panther Community Stadium. .
Vaughn Schreinkofer had a big night in his final regular season game as quarterback for the Panthers, completing 12 of 18 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Aaron Bowers led the way in receiving with four catches for 90 yards, including a touchdown. For the touchdown, he had to scramble for a jump ball and brace his arm to score.
Glendale’s Cameron Dreibelvis opened the scoring on a 4-yard pass from Logan Squebec late in the first quarter, but the Vikings struggled to get much out of it.
Squebec was 10-of-17 for 126 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. For Glendale, Jimmy Sutton rushed for 51 yards on eight carries.
How the game went: Bowers’ touchdown grab-and-run from 52 yards out gave Northern Bedford a 19-7 lead with 7:12 left in the third quarter. The score gave the Panthers a two-possession lead and put them in control after the Vikings had the ball to start the second half, only to trail 12-7.
Most Valuable Player: Schreinkofer controlled the game like a high school quarterback, throwing for 188 yards with two touchdowns. He also scored on a QB sneak in the second quarter to lead his team to victory.
Unsung hero: Northern Bedford’s passing may have been the highlight, but running back Ben Clark churned out tough yards all night. He finished the night with 13 carries for 54 yards and a touchdown with just 18.9 seconds left in the first half to give NBC its first lead.
Most important stat: Glendale turned the ball over four times (three interceptions, one fumble) while Northern Bedford committed no turnovers.
Northern Bedford coach Garry Black: “At midnight the clock strikes zero and a new season begins. The eight wins we had are gone. As you will remember, we are 0-0. We’re in a position to be in a playoff game and have a chance. Our kids will be ready for it.”
Glendale coach Dave “Spank” Trexler: “We made some mistakes that we couldn’t overcome, but you can’t overcome them against a team of that level. They took advantage of those mistakes. “The positive in the first half was that we came out and played with them. Little plays here and there, those types of mistakes can’t be tolerated. After that, we played the game. withdrew from.”
Black on Trexler: “Anyone who watches that team all year knows that Spank Trexler is one of the best coaches. I’m the Altoona Miller Coach of the Year every year. I vote for him this year. He’s a great coach. We’re lucky to have him in that community. He’s changed football in Glendale, and I know it’s not going to be easy. They’re tough football players and have a good program. I’m rooting for them in the playoffs.”
Aaron Bowers said of the touchdown: “It was just a scramble for the ball. It’s never easy to make a touchdown catch, but I ran with a good arm around him. The way we looked tonight. I’m pretty confident. We went out and did things right.”
