OMAHA, Nebraska — The Omaha District Office of Small Business Programs (OSBP) awarded $417 million in contracts to small businesses last year and is looking to exponentially expand that number. To support this goal, the program team recently held a Small Business Industry Day to engage with local small businesses and show them how they can be involved in government contracts.
As part of the day’s events, large companies Tetratech, Pond and HDR gave presentations on the rules for partnerships with small and medium-sized businesses. We also provided examples of how to overcome regulations.
“For a small business to be fully successful, it’s almost necessary to have a working relationship with a large company,” said Matt Hibbert, director of OSBP. “Small businesses can take advantage of the experience, resources and capital of larger companies.”
The City of Omaha also presented local government contracting options for companies with skill sets other than those required by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
One of the biggest benefits of the industry day was the numerous networking opportunities.
Through the event, participants were able to interact not only with representatives of large companies, but also with each other. This allowed small business owners to build valuable relationships that could lead to future partnerships and collaborations.
The Omaha area plans to build on Expo momentum by continuing to host events and provide resources to support the growth and success of small businesses in the region.
“The goal of the Omaha Area Small Business Program is to optimize business opportunities for the small business community in federal acquisition programs and maintain the Omaha Area as a premier district,” Hibbert said.
“The Small Business Program team is deeply involved in the acquisition process, from assisting with market research to hosting outreach events and maintaining an up-to-date list of interested vendors.”
“Working to foster a thriving small business ecosystem remains a top priority for the Omaha region,” Hibbert said. “The Small Business Program helps create more vibrant and dynamic local economies by providing access to valuable resources and opportunities.”
Hibbert added that the team will continue to work toward its goal of dramatically increasing contracts with small and medium-sized businesses and ensuring the community benefits from a robust and diverse marketplace.
