Drew Carlovitz posted a back-to-back shutout for BC High this week, beating the Catholic Memorial and St. Mary’s. He has five in the season. Jonathan Wiggs/Glovestaff
Lynn – Drew Carlovitz first told his parents Peter and Heather they wanted to play goalkeeper at the age of three.
His parents believed it was a stage and did not want to endure the early morning at the rink.
At the age of six, Drew finally won his wish, and after learning three weeks of skating, he was the first to wear a goalkeeper pad.
He’s been crazy ever since.
His passion led Kohasset residents to BC High. There, at age 16, he took over his first goaltender job as a freshman and excels as a sophomore.
He plays to honor his late father, who died at ALS in 2019. One of Peter’s great joys was watching Drew Play hockey. When his condition worsened, a friend either turned Peter into Fasety from the Link or he watched on a live burn. To this day, Peter’s friends appear to celebrate Drew’s success.
“(Peter) really made me promise to give him every opportunity,” Heather said.
Heather believes that fuel painted it on the best he could.
“My dad, he didn’t play hockey,” Drew said. “I saw Tucca Rusk on TV, telling him I wanted to play hockey, I wanted to be a goalkeeper. My dad did everything for me. He got me a gear set in hand. He came in and brought me to learn to skate and taught me how to play a goalkeeper. He was always watching the NHL games with me and everything.”
After a 0-4 start last season, BC High Coach John Flaherty called out the Callovits number. The Eagles got his first start. By midseason, the crease was him. He hasn’t looked back since.
“He had no intention of taking the back seat to anyone,” Flaherty said. “He wanted that net and he was going to compete for it. And he did. ”
As a sophomore, Karlovits shines, boasting a dazzling .955 save percentage, 1.33 goals against an average and five shutouts. After a surprising 46-piece shutout against the Sixth Catholic Memorial, Callovits placed Blank Blank St. Marys (4-0), who is in the eighth BC, on Saturday at Connelly Rink.
“His game has matured,” Flaherty said. “Last year he was making a save. Now he refines his game and plays a mature position. He’s not wasting any energy. He’s a little quieter in the crease. He’s an athletic goalkeeper, but he relies a little more on the technical side and athleticism when he needs it.”
Karlovits actually hate getting scores. If the pack squeals at him, he turns around and scoops it out of the net. His fierce competitiveness has transformed into a goaltender motto.

His play and his attitude respect Carlovit in the locker room as he is loved by the people around him. This season he finds his voice, communicates with his defenders and feels comfortable enough to move forward in the locker room.
“What that brotherly love did is incredible,” Heather Carlovitz said. “He wouldn’t be where he is without them.”
Heather drives two hours a day to allow Drew to continue to commit to his studies and play the games he loves. It leads to a long day as a single parent, but it’s out of love and I’m grateful to Drew.
“It’s good to know someone has your back,” Drew said. “Even if I have a bad game, she’s always there for me no matter what.”
