SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – These days, many people get directions on their cell phones, but if you want to find a business without listening to your phone, having the address number displayed on the building can be a convenient solution.
So Larry asked: Are there any guidelines for how businesses should display their addresses in Springfield?
Springfield has two sections of regulations that apply to this issue. One section simply says, “All businesses and dwellings within the city shall be numbered,” and it also says, “All such numbers shall be clearly visible from the street, not less than three inches in height, and not more than 50 feet from the street.”
Fire departments would like to see those numbers, too.
“From a public safety standpoint, we want you to have your number posted where it’s visible so we can get to you quickly,” said Springfield Deputy Fire Chief Oran Morelan. “If you’re a store in a mall, we want you to have your number posted at the front and back of your building so we can get into the right building when we need to. But in an emergency, it’s important that you have that number visible and it’s important that you keep the vegetation behind it clear.”
Regarding that last point, the deputy chief said this time of year landscaping can grow to the point that it hides the numbers, so he asks that people keep trees and bushes trimmed so the numbers are visible.
The International Fire Code also states that numbers may not be written as letters.
On the other hand, if you come across a store that doesn’t have a number displayed, tell the manager about it – they’ll probably want to make it easier to find.
So, going back to Larry’s question… are there any guidelines or requirements for how businesses can display their address in Springfield? The answer is yes.
