These homemade cinnamon applesauce ornaments are perfect for decorating your tree.
Let’s try DIY decorations!
If you’re looking for a fun and easy craft to do with the kids for the holidays, try these creative and frugal homemade cinnamon applesauce ornaments. It will be very cute and the house will smell like Christmas.
Many people made these nostalgic ornaments when they were in elementary school, and they remain a fun holiday tradition.
This DIY will make about 15 ornaments, so you can gift them to several friends.
What are cinnamon applesauce ornaments?
As the name suggests, this ornament uses only applesauce and cinnamon in the dough! To stay super frugal, I decided to use Dollar Tree cinnamon for this recipe. I’m so glad I tried it! You can’t beat the price, but of course you can use any powdered cinnamon. I was also able to buy some fluffy paint at Walmart for less than $2.
Although there are ways to preserve these perishable ornaments, they may lose their scent, which is what sets them apart from other fake cookie ornaments. If you really want to preserve it, spray it with clear coat spray. I have the one from when I first made this Christmas craft in 2014 and it still has the cinnamon scent.
If you tie cinnamon applesauce ornaments together, you can use them not only as ornaments but also as a cute Christmas garland.

1
Combine cinnamon and applesauce in a bowl. Mix well until the dough comes together. Use a spoon at first, then mix by hand. If it’s too dry, add more applesauce, 1 teaspoon at a time.
2
Roll out the dough until it is about 1/3 inch thick. To make cleanup easier, I spread the mixture between two sheets of nonstick parchment paper. You can also use plastic wrap.
3
Prepare a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Cut out the shapes and place them on a sheet pan just like you would when making cookies. Continue rolling out the dough to get as many cutouts as possible. Use a straw to make a hole near the top of each cutout.
4
Bake at 200 degrees for 2.5 hours (fun side effect: your house will smell amazing!) If you don’t want to bake, you can also air dry for 2-3 days.
5
Once completely cooled, decorate with expanded white paint, tie with ribbon or string, and hang on the tree. You can make about 15 ornaments.
This is the best scented ornament ever.
The kids and I had so much fun making these. I love decorating my Christmas tree with homemade keepsakes. Thank you to Hip2Save reader Jennifer who sent me this recipe and idea a few years ago. This is the tried and true DIY that we still love.
PS: If you’re wondering if you can eat these, they probably don’t taste the best. 🤣 Either way, this is a great way to fill your home with delicious Christmas scents without worrying about eating too many real cookies!
