The Democratic National Committee on Friday sought to block efforts by North Carolina Republicans to invalidate tens of thousands of votes from the November election and overturn a state Supreme Court ruling won by Democrats.
The DNC filed a lawsuit Friday to intervene in a lawsuit filed in late December by the Republican National Committee of Wake County, North Carolina, seeking to invalidate the vote over missing information on registration forms.
This week, the North Carolina Supreme Court blocked the state Board of Elections from certifying the results of the November Supreme Court election, which Democratic colleague Alison Riggs won by just over 700 votes. Republican candidate Jefferson Griffin claimed that voter registration information was missing in multiple legal filings before and after the election.
The moves in North Carolina have been countered by Democrats and democracy advocates, who fear voters will be disenfranchised and elections will be overturned.
“North Carolina Republicans have been openly trying to steal the election at taxpayer expense for months, wasting approximately 60,000 legal votes cast in the North Carolina Supreme Court race. “We’ve been trying to make this happen,” said Democratic National Committee Chairman Jamie Harrison. statement. “On November 5th, North Carolina voters elected Judge Allison Riggs. Their voices will be heard.”
The Wake County lawsuit alleges that some voters should not have been eligible to vote because their voter registration forms did not include their driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number.
At issue is how states are implementing the requirements under the Help America Vote Act. The state’s voter registration form asks for a driver’s license and Social Security number, but does not say the information is required. Those who did not provide either were given a unique identifier by state election officials and required to show identification at the time of voting. This had been a common process without incident for 20 years, until Republicans took over this election cycle, the DNC said in its brief.
The RNC’s lawsuit estimates that the state election board does not have this information for about 60,000 voters, and they argue that their votes should not be counted. They require the board to keep these ballots separate, contact relevant voters for missing information, and then remove the ballots from state and local elections if they do not respond. I’m looking for it.
The Wake County lawsuit is “the fifth attempt in 13 months to disenfranchise voters who allegedly failed to include their driver’s license or Social Security number on their voter registration forms,” the DNC wrote. are.
