The San Francisco 49ers’ wide receiver room continues to take a big hit.
Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed to reporters Monday that wide receiver Deebo Samuel has pneumonia.
“Devo Samuel, he had some kind of strange illness. Technically it was pneumonia because he had fluid in his lungs,” Shanahan said. “We’re going to check on him, he’s still in the hospital, but let’s see how he recovers in the next few days.”
There are no plans for Samuel to return.
Shanahan said Samuel first started feeling symptoms Sunday morning. The 49ers announced just before their Week 7 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs that Samuel was sick but planned to play. Samuel tried but was pulled in the second quarter. The 49ers lost to Kansas City 28-18.

The versatile wideout has 20 catches, 335 receiving yards, one receiving touchdown, 51 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown this season.
Samuel’s pneumonia diagnosis means there are health concerns for the 49ers’ top two wide receivers.
Shanahan confirmed that Brandon Aiyuk has torn the anterior cruciate ligament and MCL in his right knee and will miss the rest of the season.
“I called him at his house last night and talked to him. I haven’t seen him (Monday), but he was hurt and just depressed,” Shanahan said of Aiyuk. “Exactly what you would expect. But BA is a strong man and a spiritual man and believes that everything happens for a reason, so it’s okay. But I was definitely feeling a little down last night, so I… I told him how sorry I was and that we would all be here for him through this situation.”
The 49ers have been plagued by a spate of injuries to top players. Running back Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, calf) and linebacker Dre Greenlaw (Achilles) have not played yet this season. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave (triceps) is out for the season and safety Talanoa Hufanga (wrist) is out.
The 49ers will host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night in Week 8.
