VERONA, Wis. (WKOW) — Dairyland Sports, a nonprofit organization that is a member of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, is hosting the third annual Mad City Invitational.
Dairyland Sports works to improve access to equitable sports, fitness and recreation opportunities for people with disabilities.
Mud City Badger wheelchair basketball head coach Amy Spangler said there are a lot of kids who are eligible to play but don’t know they’re eligible.
“You just have to have some kind of lower movement disorder to qualify, so you can be an amputee or have a knee replacement,” Spangler said. “There are many invisible disabilities that are covered.”
Parents of some of the athletes said they would travel anywhere in the Midwest for this opportunity.
“Unfortunately, we live about an hour and a half away from Madison, so it can be late at night, but my son loves it,” said one of the players who participates in the tournament. said Natasha Kreis, the person’s parent. “He wouldn’t trade it for the world, so we’re going to make it work.”
Organizers say the two-day tournament is one of the largest of its kind in south-central Wisconsin.
