Give the gift of sourdough bread making! 🍞
A few of us on the Hip2Save team recently started baking sourdough bread and are completely hooked. Last week I shared cute DIY Christmas ornaments like mini sourdough starters, and now I’m sharing some fun sourdough-themed gift basket gift ideas. If you have a sourdough fan among you, consider giving some or all of these helpful supplies as a gift.
Once you understand the timing and steps, baking sourdough is easy and slightly addictive. Who doesn’t love warm, buttered homemade bread? Hmm!
Colin, Bryn and I all love baking sourdough and chatting about it.
It’s satisfying to slice warm bread into crispy pieces to serve to your family. The basic ingredients are just flour, salt, and water. Our kids and husband are really enjoying this new skill. Ha! You can go all out and be very precise or you can go super casual and I love how the buns work out.
Here are some of my favorite sourdough baking supplies.
We are all sourdough beginners and follow the same Emile Rafa’s daily sourdough recipe. Her book “Artisan Sourdough Made Simple” is amazing. I love her bread and bagel recipes so much that I included them in my gift basket.
I think the key to success is having a strong sourdough starter. You can order sourdough starter online, get it from a friend, or make it yourself. I bought a highly rated glass sourdough starter kit that comes with a vented lid and scraper to keep things nice and clean. It includes instructions for making your own starter and can also be used as a storage place for your starter, making it a great addition to a gift basket, even if your recipient is already into baking.
Measuring ingredients using a kitchen baking scale is much faster and more accurate than using measuring cups. I’m using this cheap one I bought on Amazon and really like it, so I’m suggesting adding that as well.
Fill your sourdough gift basket with the following finds.
I grabbed a woven basket from Walmart.com with a cute chalk label to put all my presents in and wrote sourdough on the tag with a marker. Due to its large size, it can also be used as a storage container for supplies!
We layered a Christmas tea towel over it to create a practical item with a pop of holiday color.
A banneton basket is not required, but it is useful to have for fermenting bread. Silicone ones are easy to clean and create clean lines on the pan. On Amazon, you can get an affordable set that comes with all the useful kitchen tools shown above, including a Danish whisk, a metal dough scraper, a scoring blade, and a stencil for decorating bread with flour. .
Colin also likes using silicone slings when baking in a Dutch oven without using parchment paper. I’m going to get some too! You can see it in action (and follow our team’s sourdough journey) using the sourdough highlights button on Instagram.

I love how the sourdough bread gift basket turned out. Even if you choose one or two of these items, any sourdough fan will love them. My mom just started baking sourdough, so I’m planning on giving her this as a gift. There are some other names on my list that you might like. 🎁
