FRISCO – Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has suffered a partial avulsion of his right hamstring tendon, a person familiar with the injury told The Dallas Morning News.
Team officials are trying to determine whether Prescott will need surgery to repair the portion of the tendon that tore from the bone or whether it will likely heal on its own. If surgery is required, Prescott’s season will be over.
Initial diagnoses indicate Prescott will be sidelined for several weeks, but the quarterback is getting additional opinions to determine the severity of the hamstring tear.
That’s the main reason the Cowboys didn’t put Prescott on injured reserve, which would have cost him at least four games.
Asked Wednesday about the possibility of Prescott being placed on IR, coach Mike McCarthy said, “It’s not decided yet.”
Prescott was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to Atlanta. Prescott said he pulled his hamstring in the scramble. He thought his leg would feel better, but a few plays later, after attempting a pass, he felt the pain again.
He did not return in the fourth quarter.
Prescott has only been on the disabled list once in his career, when he broke his foot during the 2020 season. Prescott broke his throwing thumb in 2022, but was not placed on injured reserve. He missed five games, but the Cowboys went 4-1 without him as Cooper Rush started.
The Cowboys are hoping pass rusher Micah Parsons and cornerback Daron Brand can return to the field this week against the Eagles.
Parsons has missed the last four games with an ankle sprain.
He was a limited participant on Wednesday’s injury report.
“You know it’s a possibility for me, but we’re just trying to see how the practice week goes,” Parsons said. “We’ll see where the challenges are and see what measures we have to take to see how we want to play this game.”
Brand hasn’t played all season as he recovers from a broken foot he suffered in August.
Although Brand is not on injured reserve, team officials are confident that he will return. He was expected to miss eight to 10 weeks after undergoing surgery in late August. After six weeks, he was able to move smoothly through rehabilitation, and the team was confident that he could return.
However, he experienced pain in his leg, slowing his progress.
Linebacker Eric Kendricks (shoulder), guard Zach Martin (shoulder), safety Juannie Thomas and linebacker Nick Vigil (foot) did not practice Wednesday.
Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (shoulder), cornerback Trevon Diggs (calf) and tackle Tyler Guyton (neck/shoulder) were limited in practice.
