A woman who accused Conor McGregor of sexually assaulting her after a 2023 NBA Finals match has filed a lawsuit against the former UFC champion.
The lawsuit identifies the woman as a 49-year-old senior vice president at a well-known Wall Street financial institution, according to the Associated Press. She alleges that on June 9, 2023, McGregor assaulted her in a bathroom at the Caseya Center, home of the Miami Heat, after Game 4 of the Heat’s NBA Finals series against the Denver Nuggets.
The civil suit was filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida by her attorney, James Dunn. “My client has thought long and hard about the decision to proceed with this civil case and is concerned about the potential impact it may have on his Wall Street job,” Dunn told The Associated Press. “Nonetheless, her primary purpose in filing this lawsuit is to raise awareness about sexual assault and encourage others to report sexual assault.”
In a statement to Rolling Stone, McGregor’s attorney Barbara Lanes said, “The state attorney has concluded there is no case to pursue,” referring to a 2023 criminal investigation into the charges. She added, “After almost two years and at least three attorneys, the plaintiffs have told a new false story. We are confident that this case will also be dismissed.”
The woman is also suing employees at the arena where the attack allegedly took place, accusing staff and security of failing to protect her with “actual knowledge of the wrongfulness of the actions.” The complaint alleges that alcohol was provided to McGregor despite the staff having “incriminating knowledge that there was an increased risk of battery charge.”
The filing also states that earlier in the evening, McGregor punched the Miami Heat mascot twice during halftime in an apparent stunt to promote a painkiller spray. The mascot, Barney, was then sent to the hospital.
Tuesday’s lawsuit stems from sexual assault allegations made against McGregor through a demand letter sent to the mixed martial artist in June 2023. In the letter, the MMA star is accused of “(elevating) aggressive, unfounded and outrageous behavior, including violently sexually assaulting and beating a customer of this company in the men’s restroom of the Caseya Center.” has been accused of. McGregor denied the charges at the time.
On June 11, 2023, an incident report was filed with the Miami Police Department, but the Florida Attorney’s Office reportedly declined to move forward with charges against McGregor.
