Gavin Wheeler, a 2023 Merrimack Valley graduate, has been named the Skidmore College men’s soccer team’s Rookie of the Year. Skidmore finished third in the Liberty League Conference with a 6-4-7 record and scored a program-record 17 conference points. After a first-round win over Ithaca, Skidmore’s season ended with a 2-1 double-overtime loss to St. Lawrence. Wheeler appeared in 12 games for the Thoroughbreds, starting the last six. Wheeler played about 700 minutes as a first-year player.
Subversity results
The Concord boys freshman basketball team lost to Bishop Guertin 44-36 in its season opener. The Crimson Tide battled for the lead throughout the game, with Mathias Eastwood (eight points) and Kushal Chhetri (seven points) leading the scoring. Ethan Harmon played well on defense.
■The Hopkinton JV girls basketball team defeated Somersworth 41-8. The Hawks were led by Zoe Freitas with seven points, Ellie Collins with six points, and Molly Carr, Caroline Chehade and Gemma Guadagno with five points each. All Hawks were in the scoring column.
Junior high school grades
The Hopkinton Middle School girls basketball team improved to 4-0 last week with wins over Hillsboro Deering (42-17) and Concord Christian (31-20). The Hawks did not allow a score in the first quarter, and Karlie Yale (10 points), Ellie Gregory (10 points) and Jaycee Marchand (9 points) led Hopkinton’s scoring against HD. Marchand (eight points), Briley Chase (six points) and Gregory (six points) led the scoring against Concord Christian. Hopkinton didn’t allow a score until the third quarter and outscored Concord Christian 18-5 in the second half to pull away.
