The inaugural CONCACAF World Champions Cup kicks off on August 15, officially adding a new international tournament to the women’s football calendar.
The tournament is modeled after its men’s equivalent and is designed to capitalize on the growing attention and investment in women’s soccer around the world. The CONCACAF World Champions Cup will provide an opportunity for NWSL teams to test themselves against other top North American teams, while providing a higher-level stage for the top North American teams to test themselves against U.S.-based teams. The tournament will also serve as a qualifying tournament for the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, which will feature 16 teams and is currently scheduled to be held in January and February 2026.
The inaugural tournament will feature three NWSL teams: reigning champions NJ/NY Gotham FC, 2023 Shield winners San Diego Wave, and NWSL Shield runners-up Portland Thorns. A total of 11 teams will be represented in North America, including three from Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil. Two teams will compete for a spot in the group stage. A total of 10 teams will be split into two groups in the group stage.
The group stage will be played this fall, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals, which will be single-elimination brackets next spring at a venue to be determined, as will the third-place playoff.
You can watch all the action across CBS Sports platforms, including CBS Sports Network, Paramount+ and CBS Sports Golazo Network.
