Week 4 of the college football season marked the start of conference play for many teams and it didn’t disappoint.
Clemson started the game by thoroughly dominating conference rival North Carolina State, scoring 45 points in the first half to handily win the game and prove they can go toe-to-toe with Miami for the ACC lead.
There were some historic moments in the early going, too: James Madison scored the most points ever in a first half against North Carolina, 70-50, in a major upset. (North Carolina had never allowed that many points in a first half until Saturday.) Then Temple kicker Maddux Trujillo booted a 64-yard field goal, the longest kick in 16 years, just one yard shy of tying Martin Gramatica’s record.
In the afternoon game, No. 18 Michigan beat No. 11 USC in a way that only the Wolverines can, essentially winning on the ground. In another ranked-versus-ranked game, No. 12 Utah held off No. 14 Oklahoma State for a Big 12 win despite Utah quarterback Cameron Rising missing another game.
Then Colorado delivered the excitement of the night. Shedell Sanders scored a touchdown in the final seconds to send the Buffaloes into overtime, where they won as Colorado fans stormed the field not once but twice. And then No. 6 Tennessee handily beat No. 15 Oklahoma in a showdown in Norman.
And in the night’s closing game, BYU upset No. 13 Kansas State, 38-9, in Provo.
Here are the winners and losers from Week 4 of college football.
