The Department of Business Administration at Clemson University’s Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business is pleased to announce the launch of the Master of Science in Sports Business and Analytics (MSSBA) program, designed to equip students with the skills necessary for careers in the business of sports, including front office personnel, analytics, general managers and sports executives.
“The business side of sports is booming, and this program will give Clemson students a competitive advantage off the field, helping them take their on-field performance to new levels while also increasing their bottom line,” said Craig Wallace, dean of the College of Business.
Recently approved by the Clemson University Board of Trustees and the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, this 36-credit program addresses the growing demand for professionals with sports business and data analytics skills. The curriculum covers key areas of study including management, operations, strategy, finance, legal issues and ethics in the sports industry.
The MSSBA program will span 14 months, including summer, fall, and spring sessions. Recruitment for the program will open in Fall 2024. Approximately 30 full-time students will be selected by the School of Business Selection Committee in Spring 2025. The first group of students will begin classes in May 2025.
What sets this program apart is its unique integration of business management and analytics in the sports industry. While many similar programs focus on either sports management or sports biometrics, MSSBA offers a balanced approach to the intersection of sports business and analytics. Graduates will gain strong foundational business knowledge and advanced analytical skills, including data mining, cleaning, storage predictive analytics, and decision analytics.
David Payton, clinical professor in the Powers College of Business, has more than 20 years of experience working with analytics platforms and will lead the program. “This program will provide graduates with the opportunity to excel in analytics and business leadership roles within the sports industry. We aim to leverage Clemson’s championship sports culture, brand recognition and top-ranked data science program to become a premier destination for sports analytics and business management professionals.”
