Pueblo Zoo receives certification
Pueblo Zoo recently received accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums after a comprehensive evaluation by an independent committee.
This award recognizes zoos that provide outstanding animal care, educational experiences, and conservation efforts.
Dan Ash, president and CEO of the association, said in a press release that the honor is “a mark of excellence and a testament to the zoo’s unwavering dedication to the highest standards of animal care and conservation.”
Abby Kraus, Pueblo Zoo’s executive director, said achieving certification “is a team effort and we strive to uphold these standards every day.”
“As a small zoo, we are especially proud to stand alongside other esteemed institutions and demonstrate what our community can accomplish,” Kraus said.
Pueblo West Subway Commission to hold public hearing on proposed utility rate increase
Pueblo West Metropolitan District will hold public hearings on proposed water rates and rate adjustments on October 28 at 5 p.m. and November 12 at 5 p.m. in the board meeting room in the district office, 356 S. McCulloch Blvd. do. No. 103.
The district also plans to hold public hearings on the proposed 2025 budget on Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. and Dec. 9 at 5 p.m.
Copies of the proposed budget are available at the district administration office at 63 E. Spaulding Ave. or online at pueblowestmetro.us. Interested electors residing in the district may object to the budget at any time before the final budget is adopted.

Pueblo County Commissioner Receives LGBTQ+ Advocate of the Year Award
Pueblo County Commissioner Daneya Esgar recently received the LGBTQ+ Advocate of the Year award at the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 45th Annual National Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Washington, D.C.-based Latino business advocacy and resource organization supports entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs, and others whose work fosters deeper understanding and closer collaboration between the LGBTQ+ community and other diverse communities that advance social advancement. We present this award annually to a business representative, community leader, or elected official. According to a press release, the country’s economy.
Esgar was born and raised in Pueblo and graduated from Colorado State University-Pueblo. She worked in the news media, higher education, and community organization industries before serving eight years in the Colorado State Legislature.
Mr. Esgar began serving on the County Commission in June 2023. Staff and volunteers from the Pueblo Latino Chamber of Commerce and the Latino Chamber of Commerce Foundation congratulated Mr. Esgar on earning the honor.
