NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran University’s offense flopped in its final game of the season as Maple River shut out MVL 26-0 in a non-district football game Wednesday at Johnson Field.
This loss left the MVL with 2 wins and 6 losses for the year, making it hopeless for them to qualify for the playoffs. The Chargers won their first two games of the season against Sibley East and Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial, but have now lost six straight.
In the MVL, Kayden Peterson went 6-for-16 with 67 yards passing and one interception, and Connor Board had seven carries for 33 yards. Ethan Schauland had three catches for 44 yards. Defensively, Ethan Doering had eight tackles and two sacks, and Caleb Hunter had nine tackles.
The game started well for MVL, with the defense forcing a punt and blocking the punt to start the offense at the Maple River 38, but the Chargers couldn’t do anything and ended up going 3-and-out. The Eagles had an even stronger second drive, going 75 yards with Anthony Orduna scoring a 1-yard touchdown to take a 6-0 lead.
MVL turned it around on downs on its next possession, but Caleb Hunter’s lost tackle and Kyan Kube’s sack also put Maple River back on downs. The teams battled for the ball once more, and Lucas Proehl intercepted Peterson’s deep throw and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown, giving Maple River a 14-0 lead at halftime.
After an MVL punt, Maple River got the first possession and scored on a 20-yard pass from Zach Torio to Wyatt Walters for a 20-0 lead. MVL was forced to punt again, but the defense stood strong and turned Maple River over on downs. The Chargers got a sack and a 43-yard run to get the Eagles back on track, taking a 26-0 lead.
MVL made it to the Maple River 19 with consecutive 20-yard completions from Peterson to Schauland, but a penalty and three incompletions halted the momentum, allowing the Eagles to take a knee and run away with the game.
